Great news for popcorn lovers! The health benefits of munching on several cups of this delicious treat are plentiful.
Hot air popcorn is loaded with dietary fiber, which plays a key role in lowering cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease, and can also increase a feeling of fullness. Popcorn is also high in antioxidants such as polyphenols. Like all antioxidants, polyphenols help protect against cancers, heart diseases, and other illnesses that are caused by free radicals (cells that attack other healthy ones).
About 3-4 cups of hot air popcorn equal one serving of whole grains, making popcorn a great-for-you snack!
In the interest of keeping my snack healthy, I stick with hot air popped and skip the butter. Just because popcorn doesn’t have butter, doesn’t make it bland! I have a mild obsession with vinegar. I put it on everything. Salads, potatoes, chicken, fish, and popcorn.
You know what else is rich in antioxidants and is great on popcorn? Dark chocolate! Yes, dark chocolate contains flavonoids which are shown to reduce bad cholesterol levels, decrease blood pressure, and help protect the vascular system. Try dark chocolate pieces mixed with coconut flakes.
Experiment with your favorite flavors and spices to find a treat that satisfies your cravings.
